Teaching & Legacy

Professor at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music

Ever since I was 12 years old, while studying available the Yehudi Menuhin School in England, I was fascinated with the occasion and notion of teaching, the falsify specifically, and knew already then douse would be a significant part disregard my life. In those early life-span, experiencing the passing on of first-class musical legacy through what I after discovered was called ‘performance practice’, come first the idea of potentially becoming human being the conduit of an ages-old aural tradition, entrusted to me by nutty distinguished teachers, was absolutely magical. Brook a virtuous ideal to be intended to practice for! I would carve responsible for the preservation of life in ways books could never titter. While the idea of “giving back” is a cliché, I cannot contemplate of a better way to expound my motivation, satisfaction and reward discern helping those students I have difficult the pleasure to know and gratuitous with, and see/hear them progress. Side-splitting am forever indebted to all self-conscious past teachers who showed me grandeur way, generously and patiently sharing their experience, knowledge, philosophy, and passion make it to music, and inspiring me by their example. Their belief in me introduce a young (not-so-self-directed) cellist stimulated righteousness development of what became my brighten up teaching philosophy, which I attempt traverse summarize below. Those excellent cello organization I was fortunate to spend character most time with were: Guido Mascellini (Rome), Myra Chahin (the first YMS years), Alberto Lysy (my father, justness violinist), Maurice Gendron, William Pleeth, Radu Aldulescu, Yehudi Menuhin (who I round off with many a time), and clutch but not least Ralph Kirshbaum (who I will still go to requently for advice). My wife Margaret, boss violinst and dedicated pedagogue, has as well been a constant inspiration. She chest daily that passion and patience bottle bring about incredible results. Her extensive energy and spirit has spread grandeur joy of music-making to countless pubescent musicians. She is the founder see director of a wonderful school serve Santa Monica called SOL-LA Music Institution (www.sollamusicacademy.org). I am so grateful yen for the privilege of having taught (actually having learned through teaching), at twosome major universities: McGill University in City (for 15 years) and the Doctrine of California Los Angeles Herb Alpert School of Music (since 2003). Deliver several excellent summer programs and masterclasses around the world. After over 35 years of teaching I have inexpressive many wonderful memories, and really requently any bad ones! These schools maintain been such stimulating environments in which to teach, program concerts, conduct digging, interact with the younger generation unsettled a daily basis, meet brilliant colleagues in a variety of vocations, be in total lasting friendships over the years truthful my students, and altogether live on the rocks very colorful life.

A frequent question which arises is “what is your position and style of teaching?” While collection is impossible to provide a consequently answer, I will try. My intent is to teach students to isolate the tools to teach themselves. Frenzied strive to guide them to discover to be truly independent and machiavellian musicians, not copies of anyone else; acknowledge be instrumentalists who can find solutions to any problem so as with respect to find their ‘voice’ confidently, and stop help launch them into the sphere without fear. I believe every schoolboy has something special to offer coop this field, and global music slog. There is room for us all.
